What makes mattress design circular?
Circular design considers how a product can remain useful and what happens after use. The European Environment Agency describes approaches including longer use, repair, refurbishment and better collection. For a mattress or sleeping platform, a useful assessment must also consider the comfort and support needed throughout use.

Recycled content is not the same as recyclability
Recycled content refers to the share or amount of material recovered from waste that is used in a product. Recyclability concerns what could happen after use. Neither term, by itself, tells a buyer how long a product will remain suitable or whether a local operator will accept it. Ask what the claim covers: a component, a material or the complete product.
Start with the experience during use
Our suggested questions begin with everyday needs: How should the product be cared for? What evidence supports its comfort and durability statements? Can a worn component be assessed or replaced, and under what conditions? A longer warranty alone is not a measured service life. Clear instructions and accessible support belong in the discussion.
Look beyond a single purchase
Households can ask about care, service availability and end-of-use arrangements. Accommodation buyers can also ask how inspection, replacement and collection would work across multiple rooms. Request the basis for environmental comparisons and identify what remains an assumption. This is a practical assessment approach, not a ranking of products or a substitute for testing.
The Varde perspective
Varde Sleep is developing an innovative, forward-looking sleeping platform with comfort and recyclability at its centre. Our ambition is to change the mattress industry by bringing together exceptional sleep comfort and design for recycling. Our research-based development draws on published research and documented analyses.
Our sleeping platform is in development and not yet for sale. We are exploring exceptional comfort, innovation and circular design together, with ESPR as a development direction. Performance, durability, reuse and material recovery require evidence. Design intentions must become demonstrated outcomes before they can support product claims.
