ABOUT VARDE SLEEP

Comfort with
a future.

A new sleeping platform. An ambition for exceptional comfort — and a more considered life for its materials.

We are developing Varde with the mattress’s entire life in mind. From the first night to what comes after many years of use.

OUR VISION

A future where people sleep well
and valuable materials find new lives.

OUR MISSION

We develop sleeping platforms for exceptional comfort, with longevity, reuse and material recycling as guiding principles for innovation.

We consider the product’s whole life from day one — from good nights to what happens after use.

SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability begins
with the choices we make.

For Varde, sustainability in product development means considering the product’s whole life: comfort and quality in use, a long useful life and the value of its materials afterwards. Our ambition is to keep valuable materials in use for longer through reuse and material recycling.

Environmental impacts and potential improvements will be assessed and documented as part of the development work.

THE BACKGROUND

Good comfort deserves
a better ending.

A mattress should provide good comfort over many years of use. Its development should also consider what happens when it is time to replace it.

Many mattresses contain several materials that are difficult to separate. The EU’s Joint Research Centre identifies product design and difficult disassembly as barriers to material recycling. [2]

This is where Varde’s project begins: treating comfort, quality and life after use as parts of the same development task.

WHY NOW?

Europe points
in a new direction.

The EU has adopted the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, ESPR: a framework for requirements including durability, repairability, recyclability and product information. Mattresses are a priority for further work. [3]

2029

Indicative timing for adopting mattress-specific rules.

The specific requirements and when they will apply are to be set through further rulemaking. The working plan does not make digital product passports automatically mandatory for mattresses already today. [4]

For Varde, this is a direction to develop towards. We want to consider useful life, material information and further use from the outset.

OUR DIRECTION

The whole life.
Considered from the start.

We are working on four areas intended to support a better sleep experience and better opportunities to care for resources.

01

Comfort as the starting point

We are developing for premium comfort and support. How the product performs and retains its properties over time will be tested and documented.

02

A longer life for materials

We are investigating how components can be maintained, separated and assessed for reuse or material recycling.

03

Knowledge that stays with the product

We are developing a digital product passport intended to make relevant information about the product, materials and care more accessible.

04

A considered route back

We are developing a deposit-return concept with a financial incentive to return the product. Amounts, return conditions and collection arrangements remain in development.

In development. The product is not for sale. Comfort, useful life and opportunities for reuse and material recycling will be tested and documented. The product passport and deposit-return concept are not active services.

THE FOUNDER

Industrial experience.
A personal ambition.

Cyrus Zareen has spent much of his working life developing and leading Norwegian manufacturing companies. As a senior executive, he has worked across the entire business — from people and ideas to production, customers and finance. His leadership roles, including in Ekornes’ mattress business, bring product insight and an extensive network of experienced specialists. As a board member of Remadrass, he also brings a perspective from mattress recycling — a relevant part of the background to Varde’s ambitions.

Change and improvement run through his experience. For Cyrus, it starts with understanding the situation, getting to know the people and bringing them along. With Varde Sleep, he is taking this approach into his own mattress project, developing comfort and a more considered life for materials together.

A few words from Cyrus

«I believe it is time to set clearer expectations for a mattress’s whole life: the comfort it provides, how long it can be used, and what happens to its materials afterwards.

With Varde Sleep, I want to use my experience and network to bring skilled people together around a shared ambition. We will develop thoughtfully, test thoroughly and build on what we can document.»
