What is a digital product passport?

A digital product passport, or DPP, is a structured digital record linked to a product. The European Commission describes it as a way to make relevant product information accessible. It is useful to think of the passport as an information route, not a quality award.

How does it relate to ESPR?

ESPR provides a framework for product requirements. The Commission explains that passport information will depend on the product; possible fields include materials, repair and recycling information. A general ESPR explanation is therefore not a complete specification for a mattress passport. We do not give a universal mattress compliance deadline here.

What should a buyer be able to understand?

Our suggested starting questions are simple: Which model or component does this record describe? Who maintains it? When was it updated? Which statements link to supporting evidence? If you access the information through a QR code, check what it contains and whether it remains useful when the product changes hands.

Different readers need different answers

A household may need care instructions or a route for questions. An accommodation buyer may need consistent model records across many rooms. A future treatment operator may need reliable material information. These are practical information needs, not a claim that every field is mandatory or that all commercial information must be public.

The Varde perspective

We see understandable product information as part of innovation and circular design, alongside exceptional comfort as a development ambition. Varde Sleep’s sleeping platform is still in development and not yet for sale. We are not presenting an operational product passport, verified recycling outcome or certified ESPR compliance.
