What does ecodesign mean for a mattress?
Ecodesign brings environmental considerations into product design across its life cycle. For a mattress, useful questions include how long it can remain fit for use, how it can be cared for, and whether its components can be separated for reuse or material recycling. These are design questions, not proof of an environmental benefit.
The EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) provides a framework for product performance and information requirements. The Commission’s overview describes objectives such as durability, repairability and recyclability. ESPR is a regulatory framework, not a product certification.

When does the EU plan address mattresses?
The Commission’s working plan of 16 April 2025 includes mattresses among its priorities for 2025–2030. The mattress row gives 2029 as an indicative year for adopting product rules. This is not a fixed deadline for compliance or for introducing a mattress product passport. The plan identifies potential to reduce waste, extend product life and use materials more efficiently.
Product requirements are developed through separate delegated acts. Inclusion in the working plan does not itself establish a complete set of mattress requirements. The Commission’s July 2025 announcement explains the priorities; the working plan linked below provides the dated timetable.

| Topic | What is established | What this does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| ESPR | An EU framework for product performance and information requirements. | Product certification or demonstrated Varde compliance. |
| Mattress working plan | 2029 is the indicative year for adopting mattress-specific rules. | A fixed date when mattress requirements apply. |
| Digital product passport | Information requirements depend on the relevant product rules. | An automatic mattress passport obligation or proof of actual recycling. |
What can a digital product passport tell us?
ESPR also provides a framework for digital product passports: electronically accessible product information. The Commission explains that the information depends on the product and can concern materials, repairs and recycling. Product-specific rules will determine whether a passport is required, what it must contain and when the obligations apply.
For a buyer, useful questions are which product the record identifies, when the information was prepared and what evidence supports each claim. Material information can help explain a recovery route; it does not prove that a mattress has actually been collected or recycled.

Varde’s approach: comfort and circular design together
For Varde Sleep, ecodesign means considering care, separation of components, reuse and material recycling alongside comfort from the beginning. Our ambition is a sleeping platform whose everyday quality and life after use are considered together. This is our development approach; it is not evidence of better environmental performance or verified ESPR compliance.
Our sleeping platform is in development and not yet for sale. We are also developing a digital product passport and a deposit-return concept. Performance, safe reuse, recovery routes and return conditions still need to be established and demonstrated. We will update this explanation as relevant product rules and our own evidence develop.
