Can a mattress be recycled?

Ask which materials a receiving facility can actually accept and recover from your mattress. A collection service, a recyclable material and a documented recycling outcome are three different things. This guide explains how to check the route; it does not identify a local collection provider.

Reuse, recycling and energy recovery

The European Commission’s waste framework distinguishes recycling from other recovery and places prevention first. In practical terms, continued use keeps a suitable product useful; material recycling processes waste into materials; energy recovery uses its energy content. A collection receipt alone does not tell you which outcome followed.

Before arranging collection

Tell your local waste service what you have, its condition and whether you need collection or can deliver it. Ask about acceptance rules, preparation, charges and the destination. Do not dismantle a mattress on the assumption that separated parts will be accepted. Follow the receiving operator’s instructions.

For hotels and other accommodation

Before replacing several mattresses, ask the contractor for a written route covering collection, sorting and treatment. Request an explanation of any quoted recovery rate: which materials, what denominator and which treatment? Keep the collection record separate from evidence of material actually recycled. These are suggested purchasing questions, not a certification scheme.

The Varde perspective

For Varde Sleep, innovation means considering comfort, care and material separation together. Our sleeping platform is in development and is not yet for sale. We do not currently offer mattress collection or recycling. Reuse and recovery remain development objectives whose practical outcomes must be demonstrated.
